You may well find the Christians that you get in contact with a little different... strange even - don't let that put you off!! As a man dealing with this issue said, ‘Look at Jesus, not the people.’
In the first century the JEWS and the GENTILES were completely different. They freaked each other out not a little. In the same way, we are different to many people in your average group of believers, so expect misunderstandings, cultural & background issues - but the Man you seek is beyond all that & above it—binding together as one people of all races, tribes and tongues.
Be warned—the people who can help you best may not look like they can, cos the way God works is in using idiots, like meself:

My man was just a carpenter to look at, yet he held the world together. You can surely see the sense of humour in that. We got to look past the cover of the book (or person!).
